Police in Mpongwe have arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly beating his 32-year-old wife to death after a marital dispute.

According to a statement issued by police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo, Tuesday, Mukonka Chiselema used a stick to beat up his wife, whose body is now laying in the Mpongwe Mission Hospital mortuary.

“A 32-year-old woman of Kantolo Village, Chieftainess Malembeka, Mpongwe District died after she was allegedly beaten by her 45-year-old husband after a marital dispute. The incident occurred yesterday, 09th July, 2018 around 04:00 hours in Mpongwe. The victim has been identified as Bibianah Chitwala while the suspect has been identified as Mukonka Chiselema aged 45 of the same address,” Katongo stated.

“The deceased victim sustained multiple cuts on the body and a swollen face as a stick is alleged to have been used in the act. She was rushed to Mpongwe Mission Hospital by her relatives where she later died and the body is lying in the same Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem. The accused person is detained in police custody for murder.”

And Katongo revealed that a 10-month-old juvenile died in a road traffic accident in Chibuli village.

“In another development, a 10 months old male juvenile of Chikumanino village in Kasama District died on the way to Kasama General Hospital while four other people sustained serious injuries after they were involved in an accident which occurred on 09th July, 2018 around 16:30 hours at Chibuli village along Kasama-Mpika road. Involved was a motor vehicle, Nissan Note, registration number AQB 763 driven by Andy Chali aged 35 of Kabanda village, Mpika District driving from Kasama to Mpika with five passengers on board,” she stated.

“The accident happened when the driver was driving at an excessive speed and in the process hit into a pothole and lost control of the motor vehicle which went off the road and overturned. The injured among them a five year old female juvenile are admitted to Kasama General Hospital while the body of the deceased is lying in Kasama General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.”

She also stated that a cyclist in Chingola died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle.

“Meanwhile, a cyclist of a gents Atlas bicycle only identified as Kasongo of Kalilo area died on the spot after he was involved in a hit and run accident yesterday 09th July, 2018 around 18:30 hours along Solwezi road, opposite Mine farm in Chingola District. The body is lying in Nchanga North General Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem. We therefore appeal to members of the public who could have particulars of the motor vehicle involved in the accident to report to any nearest police,” stated Katongo.
