UPND and PF supporters on Monday clashed in Kamalamba Ward in Solwezi after the opposition ambushed a bus ferrying PF cadres who went to attend a rally led by Vice-President Inonge Wina, according to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

And the ECZ has revealed that the electoral environment and campaigns ahead of the September 6 by-elections are proceeding smoothly apart from the Kamalamba and Shikombwe wards in Solwezi and Kaoma districts respectively.

In a statement issued by ECZ public relations manager Margaret Chimanse, the UPND and PF in Kaoma have been removing each other’s campaign posters as well as using unacceptable language.

“The electoral environment and campaigns are proceeding smoothly apart from Kamalamba (Solwezi) and Shikombwe (Kaoma) wards. UPND and PF clashed in Kamalamba Ward on Monday, 27th August, 2018, where UPND ambushed a bus ferrying PF cadres who went to attend a rally led by Her Honour the Vice-President, Ms. Inonge Wina. One of the cadres sustained injuries, but is out of danger. Quick action by police stabilised and calmed the situation,” Chimanse narrated.

She stated that the District Conflict Management Committee will meet today to deliberate over violence-related matters.

“In Shikombwe Ward (Kaoma), UPND and PF have been removing each other’s campaign posters and unacceptable language is being used. To address these issues, the District Conflict Management Committee will meet on 29th August, 2018, to deliberate over these matters. This is part of the dispute resolution mechanism that exists within the electoral process,” stated Chimanse.
