Police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo says a 42-year-old man accused of assaulting his wife has committed suicide at Matero Police station.

In a statement today, Katongo narrated that upon disembarking from a police vehicle, Miyanda Mwanza threw himself in front of a rear tyre of a Volvo truck which was pulling out of Matero police.

“Matero Police recorded a case of suicide which occurred at Matero Police Station in which Elvin Miyanda Mwanza aged 42 of Maloni Compound in Lusaka West committed suicide. The deceased was reported to have assaulted his 37 year old wife and a report was made at Matero Police Station.
The suspect who is now deceased was apprehended from Lusaka’s Avondale by officers from Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Police Station and was transferred to Matero Police where the report was made. After disembarking from a Police motor vehicle, the suspect threw himself in front of a rear tyre of a Volvo truck registration number AJE 2866 which was pulling out of Matero Police Station being driven by Chansa Kalutwa aged 29 years. He sustained injuries on the head. The body was taken to UTH mortuary and postmortem has been conducted today,” stated Katongo.

“An inquiry file has been opened and statements have been recorded from the wife of the deceased who was present at the time the incident happened, also from the driver of the truck, officers and other independent witnesses who were present.”
