The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has announced another closure of the Great North Road from Mandevu Round about to Sheki-sheki turn off for two months effective April 8, to facilitate for installation of sewer pipes.

And Avic International Lot 3 has also announced the 80 days closure of the Obama road beginning April 15.

Meanwhile Road Development Agency (RDA) Corporate Affairs Manager Masuzyo Ndhlovu says the agency will not allow the closure of Great North Road because it has not yet been handed over to the council, as it is still under the defect liability period.

LCC earlier announced that two lanes of the Great North Road in Lusaka would be closed for two months to facilitate the laying of sewer pipes under the Lusaka Sanitation Project by Construcoes Gabriel Couto.

“This is to inform the general public that one lane on the Great North Road will be closed at certain points between the Roundabout at Mandevu, and Sheki Sheki Road, in both directions. This exercise will be from Monday, April 8th, 2019 and will be over a period of two months. This is to facilitate laying of sewer pipes under the Lusaka Sanitation Project by Construcoes Gabriel Couto. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and obey the flag signal,” read the LCC notice which was confirmed by its spokesperson George Sichimba.

But Ndhlovu in response to this said the agency would not allow any closure on the stated road as it is still under the defect liability period.

“As RDA we are not going to allow this. This is a newly rehabilitated road with walkways and we cannot afford at this stage to temper with it. The road has not been handed over to the council yet as it is under the defect liability period. The Constructor Gabriel Couto can look for alternative space/land away from the walkways. Most cases these works are done without authority,” Ndhlovu stated.

And in another development, Avic Lot 3 on Monday notified the public of an 80 days closure of Obama road in Lusaka to pave way for the upgrading of the road.

“To all surrounding residents and pedestrians. Obama Road upgrading project is under construction by AVIC Lot 3 with work period of appropriately 80 days (April 15, 2019-July 14 2019). There are a lot of large machine and equipment operating on site and heavy construction vehicles access frequently in construction area and access road during construction period. Therefore the legal guardians of under-age children shall take care of their young ones to ensure the safety of your family and children. And the passing vehicles should detour and choose alternative roads. The non-construction related personal and vehicles are strictly prohibited to enter work area.” notified Avic.
