AN unknown number of people have been burnt to ashes in an accident involving three trucks after a driver for one of the trucks lost control due to speed and hit into another Faw Motor vehicle which was carrying suspected Jet1 Fuel.

Meanwhile, Police in Monze District have arrested a couple for allegedly causing the death of their five-months-old baby during a domestic fight.

According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo, Sunday, the road traffic accident happened on Chirundu-Kafue road at Kapiringozi hills on Sunday morning .

She stated that the accident involved an unknown vehicle which was being driven by an unknown driver with unknown number of passengers who were suspected to have been burnt to ashes.

Katongo stated that it also involved a Zimbabwean who was driving a Volvo truck which had broken down and also another Zimbabwean who was driving a Faw truck and believed to have been carrying Jet 1 fuel.

“Police in Chirundu received a report of a road traffic accident which happened today August 16, 2020 around 06:40 hours on Chirundu -Kafue road at Kapiringozi hills involving three trucks. Involved in the accident was an unknown motor vehicle driven by an unknown driver with an unknown number of passengers who are suspected to have been burnt to ashes. Also involved was a Zimbabwean, Prince James aged 25 of Clear Choice logistics who was driving a Volvo truck registration number ACQ 2702 which was on break down and also another Zimbabwean male identified as Donemore Magoshe of Srauss logistics driving a Faw truck registration number AEU 6414 and believed to have been carrying Jet 1 fuel,” she stated.

Katongo explained that the accident happened when the unknown driver who was driving an unknown truck was descending the hill and lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and hit into a Faw Motor vehicle which was carrying suspected Jet1 Fuel and later went and hit into a stationary Volt truck which had a breakdown.

She added that all the vehicles caught fire and were completely burnt.

“The accident occurred when the unknown driver who was driving an unknown truck which had been completely burnt and was descending the hill lost control of the Motor Vehicle due to excessive speed and hit into a Faw Motor vehicle which was carrying suspected Jet1 Fuel and later went and hit into a stationery Volt truck which had a break down and all motor vehicles caught fire and were completely burnt,” Katongo stated.

She stated that Police, working with the Fire Brigade, were still at the scene and the number of people that had died had not yet been established as they were burnt to ashes.

Meanwhile, Police in Monze District have arrested a couple for allegedly causing the death of their baby during a domestic fight.

Katongo stated that the incident allegedly occurred on Saturday between 18:00 hours and midnight.

“Police in Monze District have picked and detained a couple for allegedly causing the death of their five months old baby during a domestic fight between them. This is alleged to have occurred on August 15, 2020 between 18:00 hours and midnight in Zambia Compound, Monze. Police visited the scene and the body of a baby boy was picked and deposited in Monze Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem,” stated Katongo.

“The deceased baby’s parents namelySylvester Mumbi aged 41 years of Zambia compound and his wife Matilda Hampongo aged 34 years also of Zambia Compound in Monze have been detained in police custody and investigations have continued.”
