TODAY, Zambia turns 61. Sixty-one years since the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of our green, red, black, and orange flag. Sixty-one years since the promise of self-rule ignited hope in the hearts of millions who believed that independence would usher in equality, prosperity, and dignity for all. Indeed, our forefathers fought a noble fight. They marched, they sang, and they sacrificed so that a free Zambia could emerge. They imagined a nation that would stand tall among countries, united, strong, and free. And in many ways, their dream lives on. We are a peaceful people, blessed with stability and a unity that is rare in a region often shaken by conflict. For that, we are grateful....
