LUSAKA Magistrate Jacqueline Gondwe has sentenced a senior Local Court magistrate to one-year imprisonment with hard labour for obtaining K46,000 from another by falsely pretending that he had a piece of land for sale when in fact not. Magistrate Gondwe has, however, granted the convict an absolute discharge. Magistrate Evans Mwebela, 58, was facing one count of obtaining money by false pretence. It was alleged that Mwebela between October 14 and December 11, 2021, in Lusaka, with intent to deceive or defraud, obtained K46,000 cash from Nathan Malaya by falsely pretending that he had a piece of land for sale, when in fact not.
