LUSAKA High Court Judge Mwaka Ngoma yesterday entered a plea of not guilty and ordered the commencement of trial in a matter where Socialist Party leader Dr Fred M’membe is charged with espionage. This was despite Dr M’membe’s protest that he did not understand the amended charge. In this matter, it is alleged that between August 26 and September 16, 2023, Dr M’membe, jointly and while acting together with others, for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of Zambia, communicated or gave some information. The information in issue was published through a documentary which was communicated on different media platforms.
