BEATRICE Kayumba, chairperson of Micjab Women’s Club in Lusaka’s Kanyama Ward 13, says scepticism nearly cost her group an opportunity to change their lives after many women initially dismissed the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) as another empty promise. From an initial funding of K13,000, the club has today been able to grow the amount to K19,000 through selling fritters, while also sponsoring their other household needs, and now aims to expand into chicken farming. “When we started, we didn’t know. We thought it was a lie,” Kayumba said. She explained that the turning point came when their area councillor summoned women in the area and challenged them to organise themselves.
