FINANCE and National Planning Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane says as at the end of September 2025, Zambia’s debt stood at $26.6 billion, broken down as approximately $10.6 billion for domestic debt and $16 billion for external debt. Dr Musokotwane has acknowledged that borrowing has continued under the UPND government, but he says it has been done prudently. Responding to a question for oral answer, Thursday, Dr Musokotwane said government has implemented several measures to ensure sustainable debt management and timely settlement of obligations. “Government contracted the following debts from January 2022 to August 2025, year by year: In the year 2022, domestic debt was K69.6 billion and 2023, it was K73.1 billion and 2024, K56.1 billion and 2025, K62 billion....
