IN the remote village of Mkasanga in Lumezi District, nearly 250 kilometers from the Central Business District, a group of women is turning a simple tailoring idea into a growing business. The ten-member Kabele Women’s Club recently received a K40,000 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment grant, which will serve as capital to launch their tailoring business. The group hopes to generate enough profits while meeting the local demand. Treasurer of Kabele Women’s Club, Chisenga Phiri, explained that residents of Mkasanga have struggled to access affordable tailoring services, as women previously had to travel more than 50 kilometers to Mfuwe town in Mambwe District for sewing needs, incurring high costs.
