CHAPTER One Foundation says the number of candidates who have gone unopposed raises democratic concerns, as citizens won’t have an opportunity to choose between competing candidates. Meanwhile, Kazungula North UPND aspiring MP Clement Andeleki, who has gone unopposed, says he believes no one wanted to contest because they knew that they would lose. On Monday, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) disclosed that six mayoral, seven parliamentary and 176 local government candidates have gone unopposed in the 2026 general election. Commenting on this in an interview, Tuesday, Organisation Executive Director Josiah Kalala said there was need to understand why candidates failed to file nominations.
