LUSAKA Provincial Health Director Dr Simulyamana Choonga says some cholera strains recorded in the country are no longer responding to antibiotics, making it complicated to treat the disease. Meanwhile, Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) Director General Dr Nyambe Sinyange says not every cholera patient needs antibiotics during an outbreak. As at October 8, ZNPHI stated that the country had cumulatively recorded 604 suspected cholera cases, with 126 confirmed cases. ZNPHI also disclosed that there were 16 cholera deaths recorded, cumulatively. The Institute further stated that 46 patients were in hospital, while 542 had recovered and were discharged.
