YESTERDAY we raised a concern regarding the move by the government to withdraw retirement benefits from former president Edgar Lungu on grounds that he is still in active politics. Our contention was that the law which the UPND government is trying to invoke is discriminatory and also contradicts the provisions in the Bill of Rights which guarantee people’s freedom of expression, assembly and association. We argued that we cannot have a law that allows Mr Lungu to express himself freely as a citizen, and another law which says if he exercises that freedom, then he will forfeit his retirement salary and get evicted from a government house.
