MONGU Mayor Matakala Nyambe and another have died on the spot after a motor vehicle they were traveling in collided head-on with a Nakonde bound truck which was laden with copper.
In a statement, Thursday, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Hino truck, who is currently on the run, was overtaking another vehicle and in the process collided head-on with the Nissan Caravan where the deceased were.
“Two people including the Mayor of Mongu District died on the spot when the motor vehicle they were traveling in collided head-on with a Nakonde bound Howo Sino Truck laden with copper. The deceased have been identified as Matakala Nyambe aged 37, Mayor of Mongu District in Western Province who was a passenger in an unregistered motor vehicle, a Nissan Caravan which was driven by Leah Banda aged 42 of Mongu. The accident happened at around 05:30 hours in Tazara area, 3 Kilometers east of Mkushi Boma along the Great North Road,” stated Mwale.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Hino truck registration number T759 who is currently on the run, was overtaking another vehicle and in the process collided head-on with the Nissan Caravan. The truck had its front part damaged while the Nissan is extensively damaged. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in Mkushi District Hospital awaiting postmortem.”
