Ministry of Health Head Communications and External Relations Stanslous Ngosa has announced that 18 new cholera cases have been recorded at Chipata, Kanyama and Matero level one hospitals.

In a statement today, Ngosa stated that this brought the total number of cases to 334 since the outbreak was declared on October 6.

“Eighteen (18) new cholera cases have been recorded at Chipata (14), Kanyama (3), and Matero (1) Level I Hospitals bringing the cumulative number to 334 cases since the outbreak was declared on October 6, 2017. 27 patients are currently receiving treatment at the health facilities; 10 at Chipata, 5 at Kanyama and12 at Matero. Ministry of Health has continued providing health promotion messages and provision of chlorin through the multi-disciplinary taskforce on Cholera,” Ngosa stated.

He stated that the ministry was optimistic that with increased sensitisation, the outbreak would be contained.

“Cholera thrives in the dirty environment hence the need to practice hygiene. Food should be properly covered and heated before eating. Washing hands after using the toilet and before handling food should be part of the culture, everywhere and at all times. The Ministry remains optimistic that with concerted effort, responsibility at individual and community levels, the outbreak will be contained,” stated Ngosa.
