NRPUP has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to facilitate the release of its members detained in Mongu.
On August 5, in Mongu/Kalabo area, the Zambia Police arrested musicians Moses Ng’andwe, alias Chester, Felix Ndangeni Inshila (Felix Mangani Phiri), and comedian IDC Light Comedy (Winston Ngosa), charging them with conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
In an interview, NRPUP Southern Province presidential team coordinator, Ronnie Jere, also appealed to the Zambia Police to ensure officers exercise maximum professionalism during Mundubile’s planned visit to the province.
He further urged the UPND in the province to restrain its cadres during Mundubile’s south tour.
“We further call on President Hakainde Hichilema to facilitate the immediate release of all those detained during the rally in Mongu, especially members of president Mundubile’s security detail, as well as artists and comedians such as IDC, Chester and others,” Jere said.
“We appeal to the Zambia Police Service and the UPND leadership to urgently restrain their cadres, and to ensure that police officers exercise maximum professionalism and restraint in the execution of their duties. During president Mundubile’s forthcoming visit to Southern Province, let what happened in Western Province never be repeated”.
Asked when Mundubile would tour Southern Province, Jere said the NRPUP leader, who was expected to enter the province via Sesheke, was forced to return to Lusaka after the Mongu fracas, and that the dates for the tour remain uncertain.
“We don’t know, they are still discussing as to whether they are coming to Livingstone or not. They did not conclude that last night. So I can’t say anything as regards to that until a statement is issued in Lusaka,” said Jere.
