IN OUR editorial opinion yesterday, we agreed with the call from the ActionAid country director Nalucha Ziba who said there is need for first ladies to declare their assets so that they are not accused of enriching themselves from public resources. In agreeing with this call, we raised the question of whether the Office of the First Lady was necessary in the first place. Our argument was that marital status cannot and should not be a qualification for someone to manage a public office funded by taxpayers money. Reading the opinion, one of our ardent readers wrote to us asking why the First Lady should even be compelled to declare assets when the incumbent President has not declared his wealth....
