A 20-year-old man of Munga Compound in Chipata District of Eastern has committed suicide by hanging himself to a roof pole using a wire.

Musa Phiri was found hanging by his sister, Charity Phiri, whom he was staying with after coming back home from a place where he had gone to do some piece works.

Acting Eastern Province deputy commanding officer Kennedy Chibwe confirmed the development which happened on Monday at around 16:30 hours.

“This man committed suicide using a silver wire which was hanged to the pole of the roof inside his bedroom, and this was after he came back from a place where he had gone to do some piece works. The motive for his action is not known,” Chibwe said.

He said police physically inspected the body and that no physical injuries were seen adding that no foul play was suspected in the matter.

Chibwe said the body was deposited at Chipata Central Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

And Chibwe said suicide cases were currently on the rise in Eastern Province and appealed to members of the public to seek better ways of solving their problems.

“Committing suicide is not the ultimate goal to solve problems, there are so many other avenues that can be engaged to solve problems. The problem is that people tend to keep the problems they have to themselves but when you share challenges with your family members, church members or neighbours, such cases can be prevented. Moreover, if you commit suicide, you are putting your family in financial problems,” said Chibwe.
