The Copperbelt University Management has asked the Ministry of Defense to help with renovations at the country’s second highest institution of learning.

In a memo, acting CBU registrar Margaret Banda stated that military officers are expected to be on Campus for a period of 10 to 14 days effective February 2, 2018.

“This serves to inform the University Community that the University Management has sought technical assistance from the Ministry of Defence to help expedite renovation works that are currently underway in the students’ hostels, following the inspection of the University premises by the Copperbelt Provincial Health Office,” stated Banda.

“We shall therefore have the officers on our campus for a period of about ten to fourteen days effective 2nd February, 2018. You are all required to accord the officers the cooperation they may need while on the University premises.”

Meanwhile, Copperbelt University Students Union(COBUSU) president Njikho Musuku has commended management for engaging the military to help in renovating the institution.

“Since the closure of the university was due to maintenance and management has taken a move to have it renovated by asking the defence force to help, I think it’s a good move so that the work can be done as soon as possible. Since the time frame for 10 to 14 days has been stipulated, we expect at least that there will be an improvement. Because we don’t have labour so it’s something that management had to ask for labour from outside meaning they are committed to having the work done,” Musuku said.

He has since appealed to students to exercise patience and allow the renovation works to be concluded.

“The students should just exercise some patience and let the job be done because it’s of great benefit to students. The same students are demanding for a clean environment so if management is committed to having a clean environment, let’s allow them to work,” said Musuku.
