THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 24-year-old Ng’ombe woman to seven years simple imprisonment for aborting her 8-month-old pregnancy. The court heard that the convict, a mother of two, aborted the pregnancy after she faced rejection from the man who impregnated her as well as her mother. Lusaka Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, however, wondered why Violet Zulu, a maid, did not use any birth control to prevent pregnancy if she had no means of supporting the baby. Zulu was facing one count of abortion contrary to Section 152 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
