LOCAL Government Minister and UPND Chairman for Elections, Gary Nkombo, is correct in calling for peaceful campaigns and elections in Kawambwa, emphasising the need for a “battle of ideas” rather than violence. As Zambia approaches the 2026 general elections, by-elections such as these serve as critical training grounds for the ruling party to demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles, particularly in managing electoral processes. The UPND should remember the struggles they faced while in opposition. Their leaders and members experienced brutal suppression, including police violence and intimidation, which in some cases resulted in loss of lives.
