ZAMBIA has historically held peaceful elections not because every citizen agreed with the outcome, but because voters believed there was a minimum level of decency, fairness and restraint among those entrusted to manage the electoral process. That fragile public trust did not come by accident. It was earned through conduct that appeared above partisan interests. That is why the Commission must resist the temptation to sink so low and exhibit pettiness. For the ECZ to retain public confidence, its leadership must make deliberate efforts to stay above board and distance the institution from the clear political interests of the ruling party.
