KANSANSHI Mines has disclosed that it is currently establishing a cross-functional internal taskforce to review all existing contracts and identify where transitions to local suppliers may be required, in readiness for implementation of the Local Content SI. Recently, Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe signed the Local Content SI, which has made it mandatory for mining companies operating in Zambia to award contracts to local suppliers and contractors. Under the new Mining Local Content Statutory Instrument (SI) in Zambia, mining companies are required to initially reserve a minimum of 20 per cent of their annual procurement budget for local contractors and suppliers.
