AS the country’s mining sector is rebounding following the unlocking of Konkola and Mopani Copper Mines, the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) is urging the country’s energy firms, in particular ZESCO and Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), to produce more electricity so that they can meet the pending demand. Zambia has set a target of reaching 3 million metric tonnes of copper production by 2030. The nation currently produces about 760,000 metric tonnes per annum. The reopening of the two giant firms which play a key role in copper production will set the tone in the pursuit of the three million tonnes production target.
