Back in 2020, government gave K30 million to deserving artists through the Presidential Arts Empowerment Fund. The loans were supposed to be paid back over five years, but repayment has been shockingly poor. Minister Elvis Nkandu calls it “very, very pathetic” and warns that dodgers could face the Attorney General. Among the 156 artists and creatives who benefited from the fund were some of the country’s most recognisable names. Hip-hop star Slapdee received K333,000, Kayombo got K800,000, while Macky 2 walked away with a K306,000 cheque under his label, Goodlife Entertainment. Legendary band Amayenge received K383,000, and musical duo Moses Sakala and Angela Nyirenda were awarded K851,000 through their Odini Arts Centre.
