PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has opened a wider margin over his closet rival Brian Mundubile according to the latest results announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
President Hichilema has so far polled 1,546,140 votes from a total of 135 out 226 constituencies announced by the Commission, 513,478 more than Mundubile, who has so far polled 1,030,662.
The 11 other candidates have collectively polled 48,838 votes, bringing the total number of valid votes counted in the 135 announced constituencies to 2,623,640.
President Hichilemaās current votes represent approximately 58.9 per cent of the votes, which is above the 50 per cent plus one threshold needed to win the polls.
On the other hand Mundubileās votes represent about 39.3 per cent, while the rest of the other candidates collectively account for about 1.8 per cent of the valid votes announced.
From the 135 constituencies, the other 11 candidates polled the following, Harry Kalaba 11,711, Kelvin Fube Bwalya 11,062, Dr Fred Māmembe, 6,905, Dr, Given Katuta 4,382, Given Chansa 4,192, Brian Mushimba 3,276, Richard Silumbe 2,070, Ackim Njobvu 1,760, Howard Kunda 1,428, Richwell Siamunene 1,250 and Prof Daniel Pule, 802.
President Hichilema is leading in 69 constituencies compared to Mundubileās lead in 66 constituencies.
The Commission is expected to announce more results from the remaining 91 constituencies today at 09:00.
