SINO Metals Leach Zambia Limited and NFC Africa Mining Plc have asked the Lusaka High Court to dismiss a $50 million lawsuit filed by Chief Machiya of the Lamba-speaking people. The mining firms are arguing that the traditional leader has no legal standing to sue on behalf of unnamed subjects. In this matter, Chief Machiya and 20 others sued the two mining firms in the Lusaka High Court, demanding $50 million to carry out an independent environmental and social impact assessment, among other amenities, pending full compensation.
