ENERGY Expert Dr Johnstone Chikwanda says Zambia is likely to exceed the 10,000 megawatt national installed electricity generation capacity target by 2031. Dr Chikwanda, however, says the country is unlikely to achieve universal access to electricity, but would make good progress towards that target. Zambia has set a target to increase its national installed electricity generation capacity to 10,000 megawatts by 2031. Recently, the Ministry of Energy disclosed that the country’s installed electricity generation capacity had increased to 4,576 megawatts from approximately 3,100 in 2021. The Ministry further revealed that solar generation had grown from only 88 megawatts in 2021 to approximately 841 megawatts in 2026.
