THE Women for Change has lamented that President Hakainde Hichilema’s inaugural speech lacked explicit commitment to women’s economic empowerment. Women for Change Executive Director Lumba Siyanga says while the organisation welcomes the “Grow Zambia Agenda”, it is important to ensure women and girls are deliberately positioned at the centre of development. In a statement, Siyanga said the UPND’s policy of inclusiveness must be reflected in practice. “From a Women for Change gender and social justice perspective, economic growth must be inclusive, equitable and deliberately gender-responsive. Women constitute a significant proportion of small-scale farmers, informal traders, entrepreneurs and caregivers.
