THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has convicted and sentenced a former Catholic nun and her sister to six months’ simple imprisonment for obtaining over K200,000 debt from people under false pretences. The duo is said to have collected money from clients without any contractual agreement with the Catholic Church for the supply of clothing materials. In this case, Patricia Chanda, a teacher and former nun, and her older sister, Ireen Chanda, a civil servant, were facing three counts of obtaining pecuniary advantage by false pretenses, contrary to Section 300(a) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
