University of Zambia students this evening blocked parts of the Great East Road and stoned motorists in a protest sparked by a ten-minute power outage.

Police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo confirmed the report, saying the situation had been calmed, and referred further questions to Lusaka Province Commissoner Nelson Phiri who expressed ignorance on the matter.

But UNZA students explained that the power outage caused the protest.

“There was a power blackout that lasted about 10 minutes only, but within that times, student mobilized and took to the roadside where they blocked the road and we hear that some motorists were stoned in the process,” said one of the student who sought anonymity.

“But the situation is calm now, power is back and the angry students have returned to the campus.”
