Police in Kitwe have arrested a 30-year-old woman for stealing an eight days old baby.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga identified the female suspect as Sharon Mwansa of house number 143 Ndeke Village, saying she was dressed in a Nurse’s uniform.

She said Mwansa has been charged with child stealing contrary to section 171 Cap 87 of the laws of Zambia.

“Be informed that we received a report of child stealing which occurred on October 22, 2019 today (Tuesday) at around 14:00 hours at After Ten Roundabout Restaurant Kitwe. Gift Nakazwe (mother of the baby) aged 17 of house no 30 Racecourse compound Kitwe. T. Mambwe, other particulars not known reported that whilst at home, a female person whom she could identify dressed in a nurse’s uniform came to her home and asked her if she had some procedural medical tests together with her husband. Her husband Collins Sinkala aged 24 was also present. This woman advised them to follow her to Buchi Clinic for the tests. They agreed but on the way from Racecourse, the same person suggested that they proceed to town to get some syringes,” narrated Katanga.

“In town, she sent the husband into a drug store while she remained with the mother to the child and the child. The child is female and eight days old. It was at this time that she enticed the complainant to go to After Ten Restaurant to buy some drinks. She booked a cab and they went to the restraunat. At After Ten, this female person (suspect) remained in the cab and got the baby from the mother. She sent her inside to get some drinks and she then asked the driver to drop her at Buchi Clinic. The driver of the taxi became suspicious and alerted members of the public who helped him arrest her. The woman was later taken to the police and identified. The baby has since been recovered and suspect arrested.”
