ENERGY Minister Peter Kapala says government withdrew from actively participating in the procurement of petroleum products due to legacy debt. The Auditor General’s Special Report highlighted financial irregularities amounting to K483,274,318 and US$1,396,111,768 in the procurement of petroleum products for the period 1st January 2019 to 31st December, 2022. Commenting on these revelations, Friday, Kapala clarified that it’s a legacy debt, indicating that the government left the procurement of petroleum products to the private sector because of the significant debt. “That’s a legacy debt, it’s because of that, that’s why we disengaged from procurement of petroleum products.
