THE latest implosion within the Tonse Alliance is yet another sad chapter in the long-running tragedy of Zambia’s opposition politics. It is a development that leaves one asking, with genuine concern rather than sarcasm: why is it so difficult for opposition leaders to put personal ambition and greed aside and place public interest at the centre of their politics? For years now, opposition leaders have accused the ruling UPND of sponsoring confusion in their ranks. In some instances, such claims have sounded plausible, especially in a political environment where infiltration and manipulation are not unheard of.
