ANGRY truck drivers yesterday closed down the Nakonde border in protest against the Tanzanian government’s clamp down on Zambian movers of heavy goods. The move by the Tanzanian government which has incensed drivers is in retaliation against the impounding of maize-carrying trucks by the Zambian government. In April this year, Zambia imposed a ban on the export of maize and mealie meal in order to secure sufficient grain stock ahead of a looming food shortage in the country. With the announcement of the ban, Zambian government authorities immediately moved in to impound trucks in transit ferrying the commodity to neighbouring countries including Tanzania.
