National Democratic Congress (NDC) party leader Chishimba Kambwili has insisted that President Edgar Lungu must tell the nation what he went to do in Kenya with Lusaka businessman who is also his close associate, Valden Findlay.
After renowned international drug king pin Vicky Goswami implicated Findlay in a court hearing in New York that he was involved in drug trafficking, the Zambian businessman denied knowing Goswami and defended his close association with President Lungu, describing his friendship as personal and private.
This was followed by a revelation from first Republican president Kenneth Kaunda’s son Kaweche who disclosed that Goswami phoned him after they were arrested seeking assistance but later informed him that Findlay would compel President Lungu to speak to Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta for intervention.
In an interview with News Diggers! Monday, Kambwili said Findlay was patronising State House like a government official and called on President Lungu to tell the nation the truth about their visit to Kenya.
“You see we operate very differently. Our interest is not so much in Valden Findlay. Our interest is so much with the presidency and President Edgar Lungu. And what is important is for the President to come out to tell us the truth, the friendship between him and Valden Findlay. I am not interested in Findlay’s life but I will only get concerned if Findlay is getting close to State House. Findlay is patronising State House like a government official. So the person who should come out and tell us the truth is the person we elected as President. I may not be interested in Findlay coming out to defend himself because as far as I am concerned, he is a private citizen like anybody else and if he has any short comings, it is not for me to explain to the nation,” said Kambwili.
“But if there are short comings in the presidency, we will definitely ask the President to shed more light. The President should come out and tell us ‘what did they go to do with Findlay in Kenya the two of them?’ And they were seen at state House talking to Uhuru Kenyatta in view of the fact that Goswami called Kaweche and said that; ‘I’m going to speak to Findlay and Findlay will speak to Edgar Lungu’. And indeed Findlay and President Edgar Lungu were seen in Kenya. But I want to find out what Findlay is doing at State House those are areas of my interest.”
When contacted to explain his trip to Kenya with President Lungu and to explain the allegations thrown at him by Kaweche, Findlay said he would not want to comment on any allegations made against him anymore.
