There was commotion in Lusaka’s Central Business District when word went round that riots had broken out in Kamwala.
Under the assumption that some UPND supporters were protesting the incarceration of their leader Hakainde Hichilema, people scampered and sent alerts to friends and family members; advising them to avoid the area.
Police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo confirmed the incident and explained that some men who grabbed some machetes from Kamunyaule Market and ran away started the episode.
“There were about seven people who caused confusion by going to Kamunyaule market and grabbed some machetes and ran away. This caused people to scamper. However the situation is back to normal. Police officers are on the ground,” Katongo stated.
“We will be able to furnish you with more information once we get down to the bottom of the matter. Members of the public should remain calm and should also help in identifying these criminals. Lawlessness, we shall not allow.”
