THE Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) says the decision by government to conclude the IMF External Credit Facility and engage them on another programme is a step in the right direction. On Thursday, the Ministry of Finance announced that the government would not proceed with the one-year Extended Credit Facility under the IMF programme but would instead engage them on another successor programme. In an interview, Friday, EAZ National Secretary Dr Nicholus Mainza said the country must, however, ensure that the terms in the next IMF programme were not hard on the country’s economy. “Yes, the decision is a step in the right direction, it has achieved its purpose of debt restructuring but that doesn’t mean we’re abandoning the IMF....
