JERUSALEM, one of the world’s oldest and sacred cities is known to many for its religious importance.

However, besides the historic and religious importance, Israel’s capital, which has over one million people, has a famous Machane Yehuda market, known for its food variety.

The market operates 24/7, and citizens can patronize restaurants, purchase various items as they dance around to the music being played in pubs.

As you walk around the market, one is able to mingle with military personnel, who provide security, while also enjoying the vibes in the market.

Hadah Saka, an Israel Tour Guide told African Journalists touring the market that it has been in existence since time immemorial.

She says the market faces challenges such as security, but this is curtailed through constant patrols and security inspections by officers.

“There are a lot of challenges, mainly because businesses that are open. There are a lot of challenges but these areas are secured the whole time. You can see border patrols, police, soldiers, and a lot cameras. So it is very well inspected, especially because this area and how it is the whole time. Of course not all businesses are open all the time. The food vegetables, fish meat in the market are an everyday thing. All the basic things are being closed evening, early night and then the shops are open,” said Saka.

She added that other African countries can emulate Jerusalem by having markets that operate 24/7, so that citizens can have constant access to goods and services without being restricted.
