UNITED States Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Martin Dale says his country welcomes the opportunity to partner with countries like Zambia that have demonstrated a principled commitment to following the rule of law to curb corruption.

Responding to a press query, Dale noted that corruption undermined the rule of law and stole precious resources and funding meant for delivery of crucial services.

“Effectively countering corruption is a fundamental priority for the United States as corruption undermines the rule of law, steals precious resources and funding meant for delivery of crucial services that erodes government institutional capacity and the public’s trust, and ultimately spurs cynicism toward effective, accountable governance. In June 2021, President Biden established the fight against corruption as a core U.S. national security interest. The United States welcomes the opportunity to partner with countries like Zambia that have demonstrated a principled commitment to following the rule of law to curb corruption by strengthening anti-corruption efforts and showing “zero tolerance” for graft – which is critical for achieving long-term prosperity for the people of Zambia,” he stated.

Dale said the commitment from President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to promoting freedom of the press was commendable.

“A free and independent press is vital to a healthy, functioning democracy. At a time when misinformation is more and more common and the truth is increasingly under attack, we need accurate, fact-based reporting and open public conversation. A free and independent press holds leaders accountable, protects the rights of citizens, and ensures our communities are well informed. The United States advocates for press freedom all over the world. The Hichilema administration’s commitment to promoting freedom of information and freedom of the press is commendable, and steps are already being taken to actualize that commitment,” stated Dale.
