YESTERDAY, we wrote about the different ways governments keep the media weak and under pressure. Not every regime shuts down newspapers or jails journalists. Some use more sophisticated methods. Some unleash private individuals and corporations to bury media houses in costly legal battles, what are now commonly called SLAPPs, Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation. Others simply squeeze the media economically until it becomes too weak to stand on its own feet. That is the point we want to continue making today. In the case of the UPND, the pattern is becoming clearer and clearer. This government wants the media to exist, yes, but not in a strong, confident and financially stable state. It wants a media that survives, but struggles....
