POLICE are investigating a matter in which a 33-year-old police officer of Mansa has committed suicide.

In a statement, Wednesday, Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that the deceased’s body was discovered in a pool of blood behind a Police Post, with an AK47 firearm beside it.

He stated that the body, dressed in a police combat uniform, was discovered by a resident of Maiteneke area who was going for work.

“Police in Mansa received a report of suicide from Evans Ng’ombe aged 35 of Maiteneke area in Mansa, a security guard for G4s security company, who reported that he found a body of a Police officer lying with an AK47 firearm beside it behind Maiteneke Police Post, which is in a built up area comprising of shops and houses. This occurred today 9th March, 2022 at 05:00 hours at Maiteneke Police Post in Mansa. Brief facts are that Evans Ng’ombe who is a resident of Maiteneke area was going for work passing behind Maiteneke Police Post foot path road when he saw a body dressed in a police combat uniform lying in a pool of blood and besides it was an AK 47 firearm,” stated Hamoonga.

“He then went at the inquiries office at Maiteneke Police Post to report the matter only to find Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) officers Male Maximilan Kaunda aged 30 and Male Sali Joe aged 22. The two CCPU officers went to the scene and upon reaching there only to find the officer who was on duty with them suspected to have committed suicide. They immediately called the officer in charge for Maiteneke Police Post Sergeant Zileni Eric who rushed to the scene and identified the deceased as Constable Chitalu Isaac aged 33 of Zesco compound in Mansa, a Police Officer based at Maiteneke Police Post. Police picked the body and deposited it at Mansa General hospital mortuary. Police are investigating the matter.”
