A man of Chambishi District on the Copperbelt Province has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment with hard labour by the Kitwe High court for Manslaughter.
Musonda Chongo was charged with Manslaughter Contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Allegations were that on June 14,2018 in Chambishi District, Chongo unlawfully caused the death of his wife, Yvone Kampamba, by punching her on the forehead, following a domestic dispute, thereby leading her to her death.
Appearing for plea before judge Timothy Katanekwa, the accused person pleaded guilty to the offence of Manslaughter.
Judge Katanekwa said in sentencing him that the accused person was supposed to be the wife’s protector and was expected to show love to her and not beating her.
The judge said it was unfortunate that GBV cases were still on rise, adding that there was need to impose sentences that would deter would be offenders.
He Katanekwa said upon the the accused person’s own admission of the offence and facts being true and correct he had found him guilty of the offence and was convicting him accordingly.
In mitigation, the accused person begged for the courts leniency, saying he had learnt his lesson.
But the judge went ahead to mete out a 10-year sentence.
