ECONOMIST Professor Oliver Saasa says the mealie meal issue is not the main problem in Zambia but the high unemployment levels, which result in people not having disposable income. And Prof Saasa says even those in employment are finding it difficult to meet their basic needs because their take home pay is not sufficient. Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Johan Hallenborg recently remarked that while there were many factors causing economic challenges in many countries, there was need to respect that people were struggling and the increasing cost of mealie meal could not be taken lightly.
