THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has asked the government to consider increasing the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) threshold from K4,000 to K8,000 so as to help most workers overcome the negative effects of the economy. In his argument, ZCTU president Nkole Chishimba says that if the tax base was increased to target those in the informal sector, then government would not lose out on tax revenue because it would collect money from a larger population and that would cover for those who will be excluded from paying PAYE after the threshold is raised Nkole Chishimba: “We have actually made a proposal that it [PAYE] is raised… We have proposed K8,000 actually.
