Looking back: Mr Hakainde Hichilema, after having contested five previous elections in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016, finally won the 2021 Presidential election with over 59% of the vote; the highest ever in any Presidential election since 1991. In the 2006 election, he came 3rd with 25% of the votes. In the 2008 election, he came 3rd with 19.7% of the vote. In the 2011 election, he came 3rd with 18.5% of the vote. His popularity was declining. In the 2015 election, he came 2nd with 47.16% of the vote, ‘losing’ by a narrow margin of 27, 757 votes (1.6%) of the votes.
