THE Auditor General’s report on the audit of accounts of local authorities for the financial year ended December 31, 2023, has revealed that 109 councils owe various institutions a total of K3,522,262,654 in statutory and other obligations, including taxes, pensions and insurance contributions. The report has indicated that some of these debts had been outstanding from as far back as 2013. The report has further disclosed that during the period under review, 19 councils were expected to collect K1,447,216,249 in revenue from property rates, billboards and personal levies, but as at October 31, 2024, only K315,413,959 had been collected, leaving an outstanding balance of K1,131,802,290.
