US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales has announced that his government is cutting K1.4 billion in annual aid for malaria, HIV and TB medication due to the Zambian government’s failure to take action against theft of American-donated drugs. He says the dynamics observed in terms of the theft’s pattern and frequency left him with zero doubt that this is an organised criminal endeavour involving fairly senior people. Ambassador Gonzales, however, says he will ensure that the US government continues to deliver lifesaving medicines and medical supplies to Zambia until January 2026, to allow government to develop a transition plan.
