WE agree wholeheartedly with the World Health Organization (WHO) Resident Representative to Zambia, Dr Clement Lasuba, who has emphasised the urgent need to deepen investment in Primary Health Care in the face of funding cuts by the American government. His message comes at a time when Zambia is grappling with the very real effects of aid withdrawal, especially in the health sector which has been heavily dependent on donor support. Zambia’s dependency on donor funding has always been a cause for concern. The USAID funding cut should therefore not come as a surprise. If anything, it was long overdue and perhaps inevitable.
